Not so magic after all.....

I'm having a little problem with my Magic Steroid Pill. It makes me have to go potty. ALL THE TIME!! Sometimes before I have the chance to tell anyone so I've had quite a few accidents in the house lately. It's really embarrassing. Especially at my age when I know better. I just can't help it. All of a sudden it just hits me and I have to go RIGHT NOW. Last night I was laying on the bathroom floor because I like the cool tile (and the great acoustics it gives my snoring) when I just had to go. My boy and girl were asleep so I didn't have anyone to open the door to let me outside. Later that night my boy had to get up to go to the bathroom and he stepped in the pee. He was not happy with me. Since they were worried I might have another accident on the carpet, I had to sleep in the kitchen all night. Sigh....

I haven't had the pills in a couple of days so we can see if I stop having accidents. Unfortunately my face is starting to get puffy again now. I guess that's better than having my boy and girl getting grumpy because I leave messes for them to clean up.

On a much brighter note, we had a party Saturday. It's one of the reasons why my girl has been really busy lately and unable to take pictures of me. Anyway, I'm not sure why all these people were at our house but I did my best to be the perfect hostess. I made sure that almost everyone got a chance to pet me and give me a bite of their appetizers. I think the party was success but it sure was exhausting.

When Dakota was having all her urinary issues, it just didn't seem fair to not make some sort of accommodation for her needs. So at bedtime Mom always put down a big vinyl tarp on the kitchen floor, then covered it with puppy pee pads and then covered that with a thick layer of newspapers. Dakota knew that it was OK for her to use the papers. It was a lot easier for Mom in the morning to scoop up the papers if Dakota needed them, them mop the tarp with some lysol. Dakota was making huge lakes of urine so we had to do something.

Maybe you will be OK if you stop the pred but then we hope the vet has an alternative for you.

Feel better, Domi.

Hugs, the OP Pack

I'm not a dog blogger, but I'm a dog lover so I've been following Domi's story for a while now. I have a border collie now but 12 years ago I had a Sheltie mix who had hepatitis. We kept her going with steroids for over 4 years. I am also a nurse and know that it's not a good idea to stop steroids suddenly. Try reducing the dose and see if that solves Domi's embarrassing problem.

Don't worry too much about having to go potty, Domi - puppies do it all the time! And my older doggy Diva often has accidents in the middle of the night, too. Just be glad you don't have to clean it up!

BTW, it was nice meeting you on Saturday! You're a sweet dog, and I'm glad you share your experiences with the world.

Don't worry about those accidents Domi. It is normal to have to go to the potty more when you are on steroids. All that extra water that you are drinking has to go somewhere. If the pills are helping you feel better, then it is worth it.

We hope you are feeling good sweet Domi. Hang in there!

Oh, sweetie, your vet should have told your momma that those pills would make you eat and drink more and then wanna go more! Have you tried Benadryl? Maybe that would help. But, now here's something important! You can't just stop taking the pills all at once without gently slowing down the dose or you can get very, very sick!

You are close to our hearts♥

Another thought. When my spaniel was very senior (15) she would often lose control. I crated her at night with about three blankets under her. I bought them at the Goodwill Store so if they got stained it was no big deal to just toss them away. I'd use gloves to clean her kennel and to carry the laundry to the washer and then would lay down more blankets.

There has to be something to accommodate this poor dog other than just taking away a medication that is helping him. Please look into all alternatives. When we are sick we want to be loved and cared for...we should do the same for our loyal companions when they need out help.

The party was awesome because you were the hostess with the mostest Domi, I just know it. I'm sorry the magic pills are making you got potty all the time, maybe your girl could do something like the OP Pack suggested?

Oh you poor thing. I think you look kinda cute with that chubby face. I hope it's not painful or anything like that. Please get well soon ok?

Just remind everyone, Domi darling, that when humans get sick they have potty issues too.
We are a whole house full of mostly elderly kitties and occasionally we'll get sick and have pee problems. Mum uses a cheapie vinyl tablecloth and then uses human disposable adult urinary incontinence under pads on top of that. They are a lot bigger (24" x 36") and cheaper than the ones they sell for dogs. Love you.

Oh yes, we wanted to add that if Domi is helped by this medication she should get it. A little clean up is a small price to pay for the health and comfort of your dog. Tell the boy to wear flip-flops to the loo at night. He might feel better.
